Bridgette Hensley, Psy.D.

I believe that engaging in therapy is, in many ways, embarking on a process of mastery as you begin to develop language for your experiences. The word psychotherapy comes from the Greek words psyche, meaning soul, mind, or spirit, and therapeia, meaning to serve, attend to, or heal. Psychotherapy is both a science and an art. It is always relational and deeply personal. Therapy offers an opportunity to understand yourself and your symptoms more fully, discover new ways of relating to the world, develop healthier coping strategies, organize both joyful and painful experiences, grieve, heal, and grow.

I find my work with clients and consultees to be a profound privilege. Over the course of my career, working in multiple settings with diverse populations has given me a rich and humbling perspective on the resilience, complexity, and dignity of human beings. My work aims to communicate compassion, hope, and respect for the inherent worth of every individual by honoring all dimensions of a person’s experience, including affective, behavioral, cognitive, physiological, spiritual, racial, cultural, relational, and developmental factors. I am committed to providing a safe and secure environment in which we can develop a trusting, genuine, and unconditional therapeutic relationship—one that helps you access your own strengths and resources in the service of healing and growth.

I have a deep respect for psychological theory and find value in many different approaches. Professionally, I identify as an integrative psychologist. I believe human experience is multifaceted and best understood from multiple perspectives, and I am generally cautious of overly dogmatic or one-dimensional explanations. My therapeutic approach integrates Psychodynamic, Cognitive Behavioral, Humanistic, and Person-Centered therapies, along with Attachment Theory and contemporary trauma theory. I strive to tailor treatment to the unique needs, strengths, and goals of each individual.

I completed my master’s degree in Education/Community Counseling at Eastern Illinois University and my doctorate at Illinois School of Professional Psychology. The first half of my career focused on working with children, adolescents, and their families, while my current work focuses primarily on adults. This developmental breadth gives me a unique perspective on how early experiences, attachment relationships, family systems, and developmental milestones continue to shape adult emotional life, identity, and relationships across the lifespan.

I enjoy both individual and group psychotherapy and am committed to serving the LGBTQ+ community with affirming and compassionate care. In addition to working as a generalist with concerns such as anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, identity development, grief and loss, and life transitions, I have extensive training in the treatment of trauma and ADHD. I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and certified in Group Psychotherapy. I am also passionate about providing education and training related to suicide prevention.

I currently accept Wellmark/BCBS, Cigna, and Health Partners insurance plans. My self-pay rate is $260 for the initial appointment and $240 for follow-up appointments.
